Gyotaku – Fish Rubbing is an inked impression or mono print of an actual fish in all it’s detail size and girth.
Earliest samples of Japanese Gyotaku – Fish Rubbing date back as early as the 1700’s, during the Edo era.
They present a crude yet accurate record of the fish and later became a means of preserving
the bragging rights of a trophy sized fish.
Gyotaku - Fish Rubbing slipped into obscurity with the advent of photography.
Mya DeRyan is one of an rare few artists in North America to practice the art of
Fish Rubbing, professionally.
Her approach to this unique folk art lends further exclusive quality to each Fish Rubbing.
Mya has developed and honed a technique that allows her to extract even the finest detail
from her fish subject.
This has enabled her to specialize in fresh water Sport Fish as well as salt water Sport Fish.
The cornerstone of Mya’s philosophy of Fish Rubbing encompasses two important tenets.
Firstly the detail should tell the greatest part of the story, and secondly that there is always harmony between Realism and artistic expression.
“Art that evokes a story” is how many anglers describe Mya’s Fish Rubbings.
Fish Rubbing is an art form that transcends traditional wildlife art and offers a fine art alternative to taxidermy.
Each of the multiple rubbings pulled from a single fish on rice paper are as unique as a
finger print.
The detail allows one to truly rediscover and appreciate the peerless textural qualities and stunning beauty of fish.
Through her travels, and private commissions, Mya has compiled a substantial collection of Fish Rubbings from around the world.
Her Fish Rubbings are commissioned and collected internationally by both sportsmen and
art collectors alike, and are becoming a new trend in “trophy fish art” and “feng shui art”.
Mya now spreads her time between her Calgary, Alberta studio, galleries, trade show exhibits, and touring as “Artist in Residence” to various B.C. coastal fishing lodges and South Pacific fishing lodges.
